Volunteer Training for Hosting Asylum Seekers

The International Association for Refugees will conduct training on hosting asylum seekers for volunteers with Asylum Coalition for Transition-Twin Cities (ACT-TC) and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The three-class training will provide important background on the experience of asylum seekers and ways congregations and their volunteers can accompany them as they move to independence in this country. Please plan to attend all three classes, which will be held outdoors. Register below. The registration form provides further detail on class locations and weather contingency plans. Each session runs from 6-7:30 p.m.

Session 1, Sept. 9 at Gloria Dei, will describe asylum seekers’ experience, what they most need, and how we can engage in helpful and sustainable ways.

Session 2, Sept. 23 at Edina Community Lutheran Church, will help us reflect on our purpose for offering a safe home to asylum seekers and how best to welcome them.

Session 3, Oct. 7 at Edina Community Lutheran Church, will discuss trauma, a common experience for asylum seekers, and offer suggestions for appropriate response.
