Rev. Dr. John Martin Mann Obituary

Pastor Mann served as Gloria Dei’s Interim Senior Pastor from August 2010 through August 2012, upon the retirement of Pastor M. Susan Peterson.  The thoughts and prayers of the entire Gloria Dei community go out to his family.  Here is Pastor Mann’s obituary:

Mann, John Martin, 72, was called to his heavenly home, Tuesday February 19, 2019.  He was born on November 18, 1946 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, a Son of Glenn Grant and Mary Dorothy (Flaherty) Mann. John earned a Bachelor Degree from Clarion State College in 1967; a Master of Divinity from Duke University in 1970 and a Master of Theology from Duke University in 1972; and a Doctor of Ministry from Wittenberg University in 1976.

He was a retired ELCA Pastor having been Ordained to ministry by the Lutheran Church in American in 1972.  John had over 40 years of pastoral experience including campus ministry and launching two outreach ministries—Iglesia Luterana La Trinidad and Red Door Outreach Mission, both in Canton, Ohio.  For the last five years, John served the Central States Synod in Transitional Ministry both as a Transitional Minister at Good Shepherd, Trinity and Hope Lutheran Congregations as well as leading, and organizing, support in the St. Louis area Transitional Ministry for 12 congregations.  John, further, taught a Family Systems class, and various workshops in the St. Louis area, and at Synod Assembly.

John loved downhill skiing, the water (sailing, swimming and just being near the water), biking, running, music, both concerts and CDs, (Jazz and classical were his favorites), but the thing he loved the most was reading, which was less a hobby and more for personal growth and professional engagement.

He is survived by his sister, Traci O’Sullivan, her husband Kevin, and their son Padraig Grant O’Sullivan of West Vancouver, BC, Canada.  His loss is mourned by many relatives, colleagues and friends across the world.  He was preceded in death by his parents.
