Masks ‘Show’ the Faces of Lutherans

Another way we can “be church out in the world” and support Gloria Dei’s ministries of love, welcome, care, healing and justice, may be to help sew face masks. People around the world need face masks now due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lutherans, through Lutheran Social Service Minnesota (LSSMN) and Lutheran World Relief (LWR), have made and distributed masks where there is need. The work of both these organizations, in this state and in the world, shows the face of Lutheranism. .

The need for masks will be even greater if research supports the benefits of wearing two masks instead of just one. In many poorer areas of the world that are not getting vaccine as quickly as the wealthy nations, masks are essential.

LWR accepts all masks that have a minimum of two fabric layers. Gloria Dei quilters have made and collected masks to go to LWR. If anyone wants to provide their masks to LWR, Gloria Dei member Carol Engel will collect, bundle and deliver masks for LWR.  Contact Carol to donate masks for LWR or if you have questions.

So far, LSSMN has distributed nearly 14,100 masks to LSSMN clients, staff and volunteers across the entire state. And they can always use more. If you want a way to serve – minister – to others during this pandemic time, perhaps you can help make masks.

LSSMN has patterns for two simple types of masks: one with elastic and one with ties. LSSMN also has one-yard fabric pieces and other supplies available for sewers who need them.

On the LSSMN website, we encourage you to complete the Mask Donation Form to include with masks you drop off or mail. If you complete this form, Gloria Dei gets notification of the number of masks members have made. Gloria Dei could join other congregations whose members have sewn hundreds, even thousands of masks.

Drop off or mail masks to LSSMN State Center, 2485 Como Avenue, St. Paul, 55108.  Drop-off hours are 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (except national holidays).

If you have masks for LWR, or fabric or supplies for the Gloria Dei quilters to use to make masks, contact Carol Engel, who will collect, bundle and deliver masks for LWR. (LWR requires bundles of 25.)
