Holy Saturday – Easter Vigil

On this Holy Saturday, we invite you to join us each hour to hear, in new voices and in new ways, 12 stories of salvation from Hebrew Scripture, held together with song and prayer. This year, we offer a series of short devotional readings as short videos on each hour of the day from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., when Pastor Bradley, by a fire, will lead us in devotion. Each is a story of liberation and hope.

In a normal year, we would gather at night to celebrate the church’s greatest liturgy, the Easter Vigil. Today, Christ lay in the tomb. We live with that grief today. For centuries, the church has kept vigil in the strange and mysterious hours between Good Friday and the dawn of the third day. The faithful gather hour by hour, praying and recounting the ancient stories of redemption and salvation. Tales of creation and rescue, freedom and deliverance, hold us in the hope of new life; invite us to dream of the restoration of the entire cosmos. Yet, even in sorrow and suffering, we remember that God has acted to save God’s people in the past and promises to do so in the future.

We invite you to check back throughout the day to pray and remember all the ways God has saved the people throughout the ages. At 8:00 p.m., we will gather with Pastor Bradley for devotion by a fire and prayer for the coming light of resurrection. We will light candles and mark the sign of the cross on our foreheads with water.

What you’ll need: a few minutes each hour between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.; candles and a small bowl of water for the 8:00 p.m. service.
