Holden Village is a year-round ecumenical Christian retreat center, rooted in the Lutheran tradition. Once the site of one of the largest copper mines in the United States, Holden is nestled in the enchanting beauty of the Cascade Mountains near Chelan, Washington. Each year it attracts over 7,000 people for renewal through worship, study, work, recreation, celebration and conversation. Gloria Dei members have visited Holden Village; the last group trip was in 1991.   Read the book Surprising Gift: The Story of Holden Village, Church Renewal Center by Charles P. Lutz or visit the web page at http://www.holdenvillage.org/

Kristen Gilje is the current "Artist in Residence" at Holden Village in Chelan, Washington. Kristen has created "scripture into art" using watercolor, oils and silk throughout her 10 years of tenure at Holden Village. She received her formal training at St. Olaf College.

"Visual art can be a powerful tool when connected to the Word and when used wisely. It can spark the passion of our faith within us and communicate that passion to others. It can deepen a community's understanding of love, deepen its understanding of value. It can help a community find a way to stand before mystery and before reality. In concert with all the other arts, it helps us hear the Living Word in a new way so that we may enter, as truer disciples of Christ, the new world the Gospel proclaims."
