Starting in 2008, Gloria Dei began a new relationship with the Lutheran Church of Guatemala (ILAG).With around 2000 members, ILAG is the youngest and poorest of the Lutheran Church bodies in Central America. ILAG ministers to people from the margins of Guatemalan society, particularly the indigenous poor. The pastors of ILAG travel throughout the country to minister and teach to more than 17 congregations.
How we got involved
In 2005, The Saint Paul Area Synod voted to enter into a companion relationship with the Lutheran Church of Guatemala (ILAG). As an outgrowth to this decision and given our long-standing relationship with San Lucas, Gloria Dei has expanded its mission presence in Guatemala to include the Lutheran Church there.
How we are partnering
In June 2008 we began a partnership with the elementary school at El Mirador, an ILAG community in Guatemala City. This partnership is based on the ELCA's model of accompaniment, which emphasizes relationship and learning together. We will listen to their needs, visit the school, get to know the students, and identify ways to nurture those relationships as a foundation for ongoing support and growth.
- Gloria Dei supports Amanda Olson de Castillo, missionary with the ILAG.
- In 2007 the Women of Gloria Dei funded a teacher's salary at an ILAG-sponsored elementary school.
- In 2007 Gifts, Grants, and Memorials Committee provided funding for the rural ILAG community of Zacaleu to purchase a cow for a sustainable cattle project that will provide milk and a steady source of income to people with few employment options for supporting their families.
