The Chancel / Sanctuary
The chancel / sancturary area of the church is liturgically appointed for Lutheran worship.  At the east end, raised seven steps from the nave floor, stands the high altar of Italian marble.  At its center is the carved symbol of Christ XR and Alpha and Omega.  An interesting symbol on the altar stair is the serpent carved in the stone representing the way in which we in the Gospel "tramp down Satan under our feet."

The reredos of the altar is in wood, surrounding the center mural of Christ, the Lord of Majesty, seated at the right hand at God the Father. In the upper frieze of the altar reredos are four figures carved in wood representing the four evangelists, Matthew, Mark,

Luke, and John. According to the ancient tradition from symbolism in Ezekiel's vision, Matthew is represented as a winged man, St. Mark as a winged lion, St. Luke as a winged ox, and St. John as an eagle. The large cross on the altar is carved in wood, covered with gold leaf.  At each point of the cross is another representation of the four evangelists.  At the cross beam a small figure of Christ stands with outstretched arms. Surrounding the figure, in polychrome, are the words, "Come unto me, I will give you rest."  At the base of the cross are the three significant words from the Christ of the cross, "Father forgive them."

altar mural is a figure of the risen and ascended Lord of Glory seated on the right hand of the majesty of God the most high. In his left hand is a jewelled Book of the Gospel.  His right hand is raised in benediction upon the world and all who worship at Gloria Dei.  This is the earliest type of the figure of Christ that was used in the ancient Christian Church.  It derives from the style of Byzantine art and expresses very clearly the truth that we think of Christ as the Lord of Heaven and earth, who has returned to Heaven to be our eternal Guide, and to plead our cause before the eternal Father. The halo about the head of Christ is encircled with faces of angel cherubs from real-life models.
