| Reverend. Dr. Clifford Ansgar Nelson 1935-1960 |  | Rev. Nelson was called to Gloria Dei in 1935. By 1948 the congregation
had 1,402 members and the focus was on the planning a new building on
Snelling Ave. During his tenure the first associate pastor, Reverend J.
Walton Kempe was called, in 1954.
In 1937, while representing the Augustana Synod at ecumenical
conferences in Oxford and Edinburgh, he learned that Hitler had
arrested Lutheran pastors in Germany.
By 1941, 16 members had joined the Armed Services. By 1944, 177 had
served, and three had died in the war. In 1946 Nelson spent six months
assisting in the recovery of the Lutheran church in Europe. The Guide
became a weekly publication in 1947, sent to members’ homes. In 1960,
he resigned and did missionary work in Singapore.
