How To Enjoy Confirmation
Confirmation class has been a foundational experience for Lutheran youth for centuries. Though the experience has improved greatly, it still presents challenges for youth, pastors, and other adult leaders.

Remember, you don't HAVE to be in confirmation class. You GET to be in confirmation class.

Lutherans don't view confirmation as a sacrament. Confirmation classes have no bearing on anyone's eternal salvation. It is good to remember this when parents and leaders pressure youth to participate. Participation should be seen as a positive opportunity to explore the vocation of Christian living—like a driver's ed course for the church.

Bring, read, and use your own personal copy of the Bible.

You'll receive a Bible when you begin confirmation as a 7th grader.  Plant to bring it with you each week.  Take notes in the margins, highlight important verses, and reflect on your notes for years to come.

Appreciate teachers and leaders.

Notice all the adults, pastors, older youth, parents, and youth staff who have leadership roles. They aren't in it for money, fame, or glory, but sincerely love youth and want to encourage everyone in their faith journey.

Ask questions!

Confirmation leaders and pastors want to hear your questions—even potentially controversial ones like, "What kind of God lets bad things happen?" and "Why should I believe this stuff?" Ask away!

Enjoy your friends and make new ones.

Confirmation class may give you a chance to connect with people from other schools or towns.

Realize that you're almost an adult!

When you've affirmed your baptism, many congregations see you as an adult member with just as much voting power as your parents, the pastor, or the bishop. This is years before the government, school system, military, or rental car companies!

Learn that you are loved.

Beneath the memory verses, Bible history, and catechism concepts, know that you are loved by God, and by your church family—a positive and joyful message to hear!

Ask lots of questions so your faith can grow!
